Serengeti vs Masai Mara: Which Should You Choose?
Both offer incredible wildlife experiences, but each has distinct advantages. We compare Tanzania's Serengeti with Kenya's Masai Mara.

"The eternal question for East Africa safari-goers: Serengeti or Masai Mara? Both protect the same ecosystem and witness the Great Migration, but offer different experiences."
The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania covers 14,750 square kilometers, making it nearly six times larger than the Masai Mara. This vast wilderness feels more remote and wild, with endless horizons stretching in every direction. The name 'Serengeti' means 'endless plains' in the Maasai language.
The Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya covers 1,510 square kilometers but feels more intimate and accessible. Game drives are shorter between sightings, and the landscape is more varied with scattered acacia trees, rolling hills, and the dramatic Mara River.
Migration timing differs between the two. The Serengeti hosts the herds for most of the year, with calving season from December to March in the southern plains. The Masai Mara sees peak migration from July to October when herds cross from Tanzania.
Game viewing in the Serengeti offers more space and fewer vehicles, especially in remote areas like the Western Corridor and Northern Serengeti. The Mara can get crowded during peak season but offers excellent predator densities year-round.
Accessibility varies significantly. The Masai Mara is just a 45-minute flight from Nairobi or 5-hour drive. The Serengeti requires longer travel times, with flights from Arusha taking 30 minutes to remote airstrips, or full-day drives from town.
Accommodation options in both destinations range from luxury tented camps to budget camping. The Serengeti has more remote, exclusive camps, while the Mara offers easier logistics and quicker access to medical facilities if needed.
Cost considerations favor the Masai Mara for shorter trips due to lower travel time and costs. The Serengeti requires longer stays to justify travel expenses but offers better value for week-long safaris.
Cultural experiences differ as well. Masai Mara offers easier access to authentic Maasai villages and cultural centers. The Serengeti provides opportunities to visit Olduvai Gorge and learn about human evolution alongside wildlife viewing.
The verdict depends on your priorities. Choose the Serengeti for vast wilderness, fewer crowds, and longer wildlife immersion. Pick the Masai Mara for accessibility, diverse landscapes in a compact area, and guaranteed river crossing action in season.
