The Red Elephants of Tsavo

Tsavo National Park covers over 22,000 square kilometers, making it one of the world's largest national parks. Split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West by the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, each section offers distinct landscapes and wildlife experiences.

The Red Elephants of Tsavo get their distinctive color from rolling in the red volcanic soil that covers much of the area. These elephants are legendary for their size and tusks, though heavy poaching in the 1970s and 1980s severely reduced their numbers.

Tsavo East vs. Tsavo West

Tsavo East features vast semi-arid plains stretching to the horizon, punctuated by seasonal rivers and rocky outcrops. The Galana River provides a green ribbon of life through otherwise harsh landscape, supporting hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife.
